The movement

The Mending Place

A place for women who got out, women who are getting out, and women who are still working out whether they can. It is private, it costs nothing, and nobody sees who walks in.

Before you read on

If somebody else can see this screen, the Quick exit button in the corner leaves this site right away, and pressing Escape three times does the same thing. It will not sit in your Back button. Your browser still keeps a history, so clear it if you need to.

If you are wondering whether you belong here

It does not have to
leave a mark to count.

Most women who need this place would never use the word abuse about their own house. See if any of it sounds like yours.

Lisa lived every one of those lines before she wrote a word about any of them. That is the only qualification anybody here has, and it is the only one that gets asked for.

What happens

One hour, once a week,
on a call nobody can see into.

Lisa hosts it on Zoom. Women talk, or they do not. Some keep their camera off the whole time and that is completely normal here. There is no curriculum, no homework, and no point at which somebody asks you to tell the room what happened to you.

What it is

  • Free. There is no paid tier and no upsell coming.
  • Camera optional, always. First names only if you want.
  • An hour, once a week, same time. Come to one, come to all of them, disappear for a month.
  • Hosted by a survivor, not a therapist. Lisa is careful about the difference.

What it is not

  • Not therapy, and not a substitute for it.
  • Not a crisis line. If tonight is dangerous, the numbers are at the bottom of this page.
  • Not recorded. Ever. Nothing from the call is posted anywhere.
  • Not a place you have to have left to attend.

Not running yet

Lisa is setting the night now. Put your name in below and you will know the day and time before the first circle meets. No cost, and nothing arrives in the meantime except that one email.

Come in

There is no cost
and no test.

You do not have to have left. You do not have to call it abuse. You do not have to be ready to talk. You can read and say nothing for as long as you want.

Who will know

  • Lisa. That is the whole list. There is no member directory, no public list, and nothing you join that shows up on your social media.
  • Nobody is added to anything else. Your details are not sold, rented or shared, and there is an unsubscribe link on every email she sends.
  • You can be deleted, no reason needed. Email lisa@lisaturman.com and ask. It is done, not discussed.
  • Use whatever name you want. First name, middle name, a name you made up. Nobody checks.

Whatever you want to be called. It does not have to be your legal name.

This is how the link reaches you. If your inbox is not private, use one he does not know about.

Only for a text reminder before the circle. Leave it blank if a text arriving on your phone is not safe. Nothing changes if you do.

Not ready to be on a call with anyone? Start with Empowerment & Support. It comes by email and asks nothing of you.

Where it stands

Being built in stages,
out loud.

Nothing here is further along than it says it is. That matters when the people reading have been promised things before.

  1. 01Now

    A safe place to land

A community and healing space for survivors, with merch that carries the message. The gold butterfly on it is the point: the same thing, after. Free to join, no performance required, no timeline you're supposed to be on.

  2. 02Next

    Transitional housing

Leaving is only step one. The gap between getting out and getting steady is where most women get pushed back. Lisa is building toward housing that covers it.

  3. 03The goal

A nonprofit built to serve survivors

The long-term vision, and where all of this is pointed. One step at a time.

The nonprofit and the housing are the goal, not a service that exists today. When that changes, this page changes.

If you came here to help

Survivors, artists and people with something to give keep asking Lisa the same question. Here is the answer.

Performances, funding, professional time, a skill, a room. The housing and the nonprofit get built out of exactly this. Tell her what you have and she will tell you where it fits.

If you need help right now

The Mending Place is a community, not a crisis service. If you are in danger, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, free and open all day and night, or text START to 88788.

Calls and texts to the hotline do not appear on this site's records. They may appear on a phone bill.
